Frankfurt -- According to news reports, T-Mobile, a subsidiary of
German telecommunications group Deutsche Telekom AG, has tabled a
1.3-billion-euro bid for Telering GmbH, currently the fourth-largest
mobile operator in Austria. In May, Western Wireless Corp., a U.S.-
based mobile operator, launched an auction for Telering as part of a
divestiture programme that recently saw the company offload Ireland-
based mobile firm Meteor to local fixed-line operator Eircom for 420
million euro. T-Mobile initially dropped out of the initial bidding
process for Telering, but, according to reports, has returned to the fray
to trump a 1.23-billion-euro bid by U.K.-based private-equity firm
Permira. Germany daily Sueddeutsche Zeitung said Deutsche Telekom
and T-Mobile supervisory boards were planning to meet this week to
discuss the bid.
